2006 Bloomberg Memorial Videotape Competition

July 1, 2005

The American College of Eye Surgeons is pleased to announce the official opening of the 2006 Bloomberg Memorial Videotape Competition for cataract/implant surgery by residents.

The surgical skills of each participating resident will be evaluated through specific points established by the American Board of Eye Surgery (ABES) through its sub-specialty certification program in cataract/implant surgery. The same format is used for this competition that has been used to evaluate candidates for ABES.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Leroy Bloomberg dedicated his life to restoring vision, which was not just a profession, but a lifelong mission. It is because of his inherent belief that the highest level of quality ophthalmic surgical care should be available to all patients, that his family sought, upon his passing, an avenue through which his life could have a continued impact. Dr. Bloomberg’s family now funds the expenses (hotel and airfare) for the winner of the competition to attend the QS program at which his/her award will be presented.

Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st place ($3,500), 2nd place ($2,500) and 3rd place ($1,500). The awards will be given on Sunday, February 19, 2006, at the ACES’ annual meeting. This annual meeting is part of the Quality Surgery XX Seminar to be held in conjunction with the Society for Excellence in Eyecare, in St. Thomas, USVI, February 17 – 21, 2006. The winners also receive complimentary registration for the QS seminar. The Application form sets forth the criteria for the competition.

It is the goal of the American College of Eye Surgeons to encourage and promote the concept of quality surgery through this competition. With this in mind, the first ten residents nationwide to register for the QS XX Seminar may do so for the special registration fee of $200 (the regular registration fee is $850). Additional meeting information may be found at the meeting web site. ACES also offers complimentary memberships to physicians during their residency training.

As President of ACES, I pledge a continued commitment by ACES to help foster and advance quality ophthalmic surgery. This commitment is demonstrated by our outreach to the ophthalmology residency programs.

Sincerely,
Signature
J. E. “Jay” McDonald II, M.D.
